Ice Flow

Video by Jan Erik Waider  (Iceland, 2024)

As a photographer and videographer from Hamburg, I specialize in abstract landscapes of the northern latitudes, with a particular focus on water and ice. My goal is to reveal the hidden beauty in nature’s details – those fleeting moments often overlooked in traditional landscape photography.

By exploring unusual perspectives and intricate patterns, my work uncovers a world beyond representational motifs, inviting viewers to experience familiar environments in a new way. The cold, rugged beauty of the North exerts a powerful pull on me, making me feel both alive and inspired.

My video project “Ice Flow” captures the winter landscapes of South Iceland from a drone’s perspective. The film documents the fascinating textures of a deep blue glacial river: ice floes drifting gently in some areas, colliding and breaking apart in others. As Iceland’s longest river, the Þjórsá tells its own story of nature’s dynamics, from its source at the Hofsjökull glacier to its mouth in the Atlantic Ocean.
